Managing patient recovery from orthopedic surgery presents clients, veterinarians, and veterinary nurses with a diverse set of challenges. This article provides insight into the process including patient discharge, medications, bandage care, home care, rehabilitation, and nutrition.

After completion of this article, the reader should be able to differentiate between routine challenges and potential complications associated with patient recovery from orthopedic surgery. In addition, the reader should be able to discuss several medications commonly prescribed after orthopedic surgery, identify proper bandage care, and explain general principles of veterinary rehabilitation.
