Module 1: Development & Socialization of Cats & Dogs


Lesson 1: Development Periods and Life Stages of Cats & Dogs


Learning Objectives:


•  List the 9 developmental periods and life stages of cats and dogs

•  Recognize the onset and conclusion of various developmental periods and life stages

•  Recall the range for the cat and dog socialization periods

•  Identify sexual and social maturity in the cat and dog


Lesson 2: Optimizing Behavioral Development


Learning Objectives:


•  Identify factors that can influence temperament and behavior of offspring

•  Recognize sensory development changes which occur in the first 2-3 weeks and understand how sensory stimulation can influence development

•  Define the terms socialization and localization and identify the optimum times for learning

•  Recognize the ideal age to provide proper elimination substrates

•  Identify the optimum age for placing kittens and puppies in their human home


Lesson 3: Proper Socialization & Disease Risks

•  Identify stimuli that kittens and puppies should be exposed to during the socialization period

•  Describe a technique for proper socialization experiences

Lesson 4: The Importance of a Fear Free℠ approach when addressing behavior

•  Apply learning principles to create positive associations & reduce fear, anxiety and stress

•  Acquire practical tips and application for teaching puppies and kittens.

•  Recognize the importance of constant consideration and adjustment to a kitten’s or puppy’s emotional state throughout interaction & care


Lesson 2: Distractions and Positive Associations

•  Recognize when to use distractions

•  Identify possible distractions to employ

•  Apply practical application of distractions in hospital and at home

 

Lesson 3: Predictability and Familiarity of Care

•  Know how to gradually accustom a kitten or puppy to different types of handling and care

•  Recognize how to build relaxation and positive anticipation with care

•  Apply communication cues to build comfort


Lesson 4: Condition to Equipment

•  Explain how to create a positive association with equipment placement and use

Lesson 5: Cooperative & Voluntary Behaviors
