PRIMARY SPHINCTER MECHANISM INCOMPETENCE (PSMI) PSMI is the most common cause of urinary incontinence in adult female dogs seen in primary care practice.1 Incontinence in spayed female dogs previously was called hormone-responsive, or estrogen-responsive, incontinence.
